I have been working slowly on another group of Dark Age 28mm models for SAGA. Here is a shot of them all as a group, with the leader (the one with the large base) in the center. This is a 4pt warband, with leader, so just needs 2 pts of supporting troops for a standard sized group. Again not the greatest set of photo’s – I really need to get better at taking pictures, but there we go.
These are painted up to represent a warband of Anglo-Saxon Christian converts . They wear white clothing (well it’s got dirty, but what do you expect) which was given to those who converted to Christianity. A couple of the models have Christian style crosses on their shields. Some of the shields are of a modern design for the period, having an stretched bottom, but not the full Kites shield shape. They also all have a red cloak, maybe a gift from the leader who also wears one. Such gifts were typical of commanders of the period and kept their loyal troops happy – arm bands were another common (pagan) form of gift giving.
Below is a couple of close up shots of the leader. I’m not happy how the shield turned out in the end. The white came out rough, even though you can’t see it in the pictures. This may have happened at times in real life, but was not my aim, as it does not that good. The varnish really did not go on smoothly on the shield in this case. I believe I put the varnish on too thickly.
The colours together give the group a consistent look, even to the point of being a little too uniform, if I’m too critical of my own work. When used in the game though they will have some lesser supporting troops who are not uniform, so these guys will stand out. Below are a few close up shots (front and back) of the supporting 16 troops in the group.
